Sometimes we must wander very far to learn something fundamental about ourselves. Today’s Fly-by of “Ultima Thule” enables us to gaze, in detail, at the most distant planetary object our eyes have ever set their sight upon. Yes, it’s a first for all of humanity and it’s happening on the first day of this new year 2019. To me, that’s reason enough to put down a few words in recognition.

„TESS“ ist der nächste Schritt auf der Suche nach Planeten außerhalb unseres Sonnensystems. Die NASA-Sonde wird 200.000 der hellsten Sterne in unserer näheren Umgebung beobachten und dabei auf kleinste Lichtschwankungen achten – ein Indiz für Himmelskörper in der Umlaufbahn. TESS startete letzte Nacht ins All und befindet sich gerade auf dem Weg in ihre Umlaufbahn. Bild: NASA
